Although the historic first private space flight
June 21 made the Ansari X Prize nationally and
internationally recognizable, it was $25,000
pledges by dozens of St. Louis civic leaders that
got the whole effort off the ground.

The early donors launched an organization that
helped fund an international competition that
attracted big donors including Anousheh and
Amir Ansari, both Dallas-based entrepreneurs,
who donated more than $1 million; and the
Danforth Foundation, which gave between $500,000
and $1 million to the X Prize Foundation. About
25 teams, including Burt Rutan -- developer of
SpaceShipOne, with financial backing from
billionaire Paul Allen -- have agreed to enter
the competition.
